The Ride ’05 Arrives in Fredericton August 29 at City Hall
FREDERICTON – The Ride ’05 arrived in Fredericton in style on Monday August 29, as part of their cross-Canada tour to raise money for, and awareness of climate change.
The Ride ’05 is a group of 5 young women who are cycling from the west coast of Canada to the east starting on Canada Day 2005 to raise awareness of climate change. The goal of this event is to raise $50,000 for the David Suzuki Foundation.
“For most of us, the thought of biking up Regent Street is challenging enough, but the Ride ’05 can serve as an inspiration to all of us,” says New Brunswick Climate Change Hub Director, Eddie Oldfield. “It is my hope that the Ride ’05 will successfully complete their journey, and that people across Canada will continue that journey toward a cleaner, more environmentally sound, and sustainable future.
“The Ride ‘05 has been handing out postcards for individuals to sign and send to parliament, acknowledging the fact that individuals need to put in an effort in reducing emissions, but government and industries need to take more responsibility in reducing emissions than what has been devised in the Project Green plan” says participant Jessica De Leo. “We're hoping that our ambition and determination will motivate Canadians to start doing their part.”
The girls also accept donations and offer green Xpression Bands that say Save Our Earth on them in exchange for each $10 donation.
“The City of Fredericton is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol, and as such, is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and acknowledges climate change,” says Fredericton City Councillor.
Since 1990, the David Suzuki Foundation has worked to find ways for society to live in balance with the natural world that sustains us. Focusing on four program areas – oceans and sustainable fishing, forests and wild lands, climate change and clean energy, and the web of life - the Foundation uses science and education to promote solutions that help conserve nature.
